Support to smallholder farmers for adaptation to climate change (PANA)
This project is designed to strengthen the capacity of the agricultural sector in the DRC for a planning and response to additional threats posed by climate change on food production and security. (Project related to 52 of country program action plan: local communities benefit from the benefits of the services derived from the exploitation of ecosystems and natural resources (land, water and forest, mechanisms and adaptation initiatives and mitigation to climate change).
Small producers and rural populations have varieties of rice, bean, peanut, corn and cassava resistant and adapted to the risks associated with climate change, and the techniques of appropriate farming are selected.
What we have accomplished to date
A process of strengthening capacity of smallholder farmers to adapt to climate change has been initiated which benefits gradually national centers of experimentation identified according to agro-climatologically areas before moving to the scale at the level of farmers in the areas in question, namely Ngimbi (Bas-Congo), Kiyaka (Bandundu), Gandajika (Kasai Oriental) and Kipopo (Katanga).
Seed production in agricultural season in 2012-2013: nearly 19 tons (14 440 tons of corn; 4360 peanut, 315 kg of beans and rice 260) in Katanga, but 80 tons in total in four provinces.
