Atlas of renewable energies

Of 217 sites previously known (but not localized), this Atlas of renewable energy makes it possible to identify almost 780 today, or 550 additional sites. It shows how the hydroelectric potential of the whole country (100 000 MW) is distributed on the national territory. If it was known that the INGA hydroelectric site, on its own, had an estimated potential of 44 000 MW, nothing was shown on the breakdown showing the rest of the national potential. With this Atlas, we realize that a potential estimated at around 10 000 MW is largely decentralized and offers the country the opportunity to develop other mini or small hydroelectric sites (between 1 and 10 MW), but also hydropower applications even better adapted to the local market structure (micro and Pico hydropower that are below the megawatt) on all of its 145 territories. This is a major advantage for the operation of such an economic resource (by making savings in transmission infrastructure whose costs typically represent between 30 to 50% of the total investment in hydropower). These sites are generally located in the most rural areas of the different territories, which also constitute the least served by electric power (with a 1% access rate in 2012). Most of these sites have been subject to desk studies (which provide information for each site, the characteristics of the river upstream, the socio economic parameters of the immediate environment as well as the estimated potential and local energy needs).  

The renewable resources are not limited to hydropower. The Atlas also shows all the other renewable resources in the DRC such as solar, wind power, biomass in all its components, as well as thermal waters and methane gas. It is therefore a comprehensive inventory of the renewable energy potential of the DRC. Apart from wind energy, for which the potential is much more limited in the DRC, every other resource listed above is abundant and largely decentralized. The Atlas develops particularly the biomass component with an emphasis on the many possibilities offered by both plants and animal residues as well as urban waste for energy production. So agropastoral mapping of the DRC, very exploited in this Atlas, is of particular interest for the production of renewable energy.
